Search Engine Optimization is a very hot topic in the World Wide Web. After all, everybody wants to rank higher and come up on the first page of Google search and get more traffic. I have identified and made a list of top 15 SEO practices that I tend to forget quite often. These simple SEO techniques if practiced properly can make a significant difference as to how my pages are ranked in the Search Engine Queries.

  1. Use rel=”nofollow” tag on low value links to not pass the page rank juice. For example ‘Read the rest of the entry’, ‘About’, ‘Contact’ etc.
  2. Use proper anchor text for interlinks. Don’t use ‘here’ or ‘there’.
  3. Optimize the images, always create alt tags and write description in the alt tag.
  4. Use search engine friendly permalinks. Make sure the URLs do not have ‘&’, ‘?’, ‘!’ etc characters.
  5. Use hyphens (-) between words to improve readability.
  6. Do not use underscores (_), use hyphens (-) instead.
  7. Do not use session id in URLs.
  8. Use sticky posts.
  9. Use tag clouds.
  10. Have a category description paragraph.
  11. Let the visitors subscribe to category specific RSS feed
  12. Use internal linking when possible and appropriate.
  13. Use sub-directories rather than sub-domains when possible. Sub-domains do not share link love from the main domain as it is treated as a different domain.
  14. Research the target audience and aim the site content appropriately.
  15. Keep the content up to date. Visitors don’t like outdated content. Updating the content frequently also attracts the Search engines spiders to index the web pages frequently.

In order to boost the confidence of potential customers, web host providers tend to guarantee their uptime. They guarantee their hosting to be up for at least 99.9%.of the time. Well, there are total 2 catches here.

In order for the world to access our website, the server that stores the website must be up; the internet connections connected to the server must be up; your website is tuned correctly and is operating normally and etc. A web host only does their job by providing reliable hosting server. They will not hold responsible on your downtime due to internet connections or other factors.

Second, what does it mean by guarantee? Is it a verbal guarantee or a black and white guarantee? Some web host shout to have 99.9% uptime guarantee. Are they for real or for show? For your information, if a web host guarantees their uptime for show, they will only “promise” this and that but do not dare to put it in black and white. Get rid of this kind of web host! They lie! While those who really keep their words will state this guarantee in their Term of Service document clearly together with the compensations if they fail to meet it. That, I call guarantee.

These are some of the popular marketing tricks used by web host providers. Surprised to learn about them? In fact I do not really think a web host is that wrong (except for the fake contact information) for the above mentioned tricks. Because some hosts are really working hard to provide good service. The tricks are meant to attract attention and meant no harm to users. Furthermore they are not really hiding the truth and you can actually learn about it if you take a more careful look at the Term of Service document. However, these are the marketing tricks you should beware of! The marketing words sound promising but the truth might be otherwise. Therefore if we really fall into the tricks and are angry to find out later, we have only ourselves to blame.

Too often web hosts talk about bandwidth and data transfer in the same breath but truth be known they are different although very closely related. Bandwidth is how much data can be transferred at a time and data transfer is how much data is being transferred.

Think of it this way. If bandwidth were a bridge, then the bigger the bridge is the more vehicles can pass through it. While data transfer is the number of vehicles allowed on the bridge in say a month. In essence, data transfer is the consumption of bandwidth.

How It Affects Your Site

The less bandwidth you have, the slower your site takes to load regardless of the visitor’s connection type. If you have more visitors, some of them will have to wait their turn. The least data transfer you have, the more often you’ll find your site unavailable because you’re reached the maximum allowed until a new month rolls by or you upgrade your account.

Determining Your Requirements

Usually when a host talks about bandwidth, they are referring to your transfer. So you need to figure out what is sufficient for your site to function. You’ll need to gather some information; fairly easy if you already have a site. Most of this information is available from your traffic history. If you don’t have an existing site, provide an optimistic estimate if you intend to heavily promote the site. Then get ready for some math.

Find out the daily averages of: -

• Number of visitors / expected number of visitors
• Page size including the graphics of the page

Bandwidth is very expensive. All hosts are limited by their own allocations. Thinking back to the bridge. What happens is each visitor to your site will be given a smaller lane to transfer the data, creating many tiny lanes therefore “unlimited”. The more visitors you have the smaller each lane will be, which makes each visitor wait for the page to load.

More often than not there is little choice over your bandwidth as your host controls this. Some hosts may limit the number of simultaneous connections so in affect slowing down your site and refusing some visitors. This is called throttling. Why Would I Want A Database In My WebSite ?

It is actually surprising how useful a database can be when used with a website. There are a huge variety of things you can do when you interact the two, from displaying simple lists to running a complete website from a database. Some examples of PHP and MySQL being used together are:
  • Banner Rotation. On this site, where each banner is, a PHP script is called. This opens a database and picks a random banner from it to show the visitor. It also counts the number of times the banner has been viewed and could, with a few changes, track clicks too. To add, change or edit the banners all I have to do is change the database and the script will pick the correct banners for all the pages on the site.
  • Forums. Hundreds of forums (message boards) on the internet are run using PHP and MySQL. These are much more efficent than other systems that create a page for each message and offer a wide variety of options. All the pages in the forum can be updated by changing one script.
  • Databases. One quite obvious example is sites which get all there information from a database. For example Script Avenue is run by a few scripts, which gain all their information from a large database. All the different script categories can be accessed in one script by just changing the URL to access a different part of the database.
  • Websites. If you have a large website and you want to change the design it can take a very long time to update and upload all the pages. With PHP and MySQL your whole website could be just one or two PHP scripts. These would access a MySQL database to get the information for the pages. To update the website's design you would just have to change one page.

What Do I Need?

You only really need three things to run PHP scripts which access MySQL databases. Firstly, you will, of course, need a webserver. This can either be on a computer of your own or on a web host. Any web server software should work with PHP and MySQL but the best to use is Apache, which is free.

PHP also needs to be installed on the server. If it is not already installed you can install it (or ask your web host to install it). It can be downloaded from PHP.net and is also free. If you are not sure if you have PHP installed I will show you a way to check it later.

Finally, you will also require MySQL. This is the actual database software. You can also use most other types of database (SQL, Oracle etc.) but as this is a PHP/MySQL tutorial I will deal just now with the MySQL database (although the commands used here will also work with SQL databases). As with the other software you need, MySQL is free and can be downloaded from the MySQL homepage. If you are not sure if you have MySQL installed, I will show you how to check later.
